Greek Mediterranean Diet

It has often been touted that those that follow a Greek Mediterranean Diet live longer than those that do not.  What is it about the Greek Mediterranean Diet that improves health?

Most Europeans who follow a true Greek Mediterranean Diet eat seasonal foods.  This means that they often grow and eat what is available for the season.  This includes seasonal vegetables, fruits and olives.  They also eat healing foods – foods that promote good health and impact the body’s immune, digestive and vascular systems in a positive way.  Some of these health foods include:

  • Yogurt – aids in digestion.
  • Tomatoes – Tomatoes contain lycopen which can help fight cancer.
  • Almonds – Almonds contain calcium which is good for bones and teeth.
  • Garlic – Garlic strengthens the immune system and has a natural blood thinning effect.
  • Olive oil and Olives – Both can lower cholesterol and protect against stomach ulcers and urinary tract infections.

The Greek Mediterranean Diet also promotes the absence of foods containing preservatives and additives. It also avoids high fat sauces and marinades. The main protein source of this diet is beans, lentils and legumes. Fish and poultry are eaten in limited quantities and red meat can be eaten rarely.

In the United States (and in other parts of the world) we have seen a rise in diabetes, obesity, heart problems and other medical issues. This is due, in part, to the eating lifestyle we have become accustomed to. Western diets rely on fast foods, processed foods and foods that are full of additives and preservatives. Our busy lifestyle has demanded that our food be fast and easy as well. However, this type of diet is making our bodies ill. Incorporating more foods from a Greek Mediterranean Diet will help heal our bodies and extend our lives!
